Prince George's 8th County Council District Special Elections

The Prince George’s County Board of Elections will conduct a Vote-By-Mail Special Election to fill the vacancy in County Council District 8. Ballots will be mailed to every eligible voter that resides in County Council District 8. Ballots will be mailed including postage-paid return envelopes in mid-December 2021 for the Special Primary Election and in mid-January 2022 for the Special General Election.

In person voting will also be offered at the Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Complex Vote Center located at 7007 Bock Road, Fort Washington, MD 20744.

Register to Vote

To vote in the 2022 Prince George’s 8th County Council District Special Elections, you must be registered to vote. To learn more about who can register to vote, click here.

Special Primary Election:

Voter Registration/Party Affiliation Deadline (County Council District 8 residents only): Tuesday, December 14, 2021 for the Special Primary Election.

Special General Election

Voter Registration/Party Affiliation Deadline (County Council District 8 residents only): Tuesday, January 11, 2022 for the Special General Election.

To register to vote or to check your registration status, click here. Your voter registration must be up to date with your current address. To update your voter registration, click here.

You may also register to vote or update your voter registration information in person during early voting or on election day. If you update your address on election day, you will be asked to complete a provisional ballot. An election judge will assist you with this process.

Vote by Mail (Mail-in Ballot)

Your mail-in ballot must be mailed or dropped in a drop off box location by 8 pm on Special Primary Election Day, January 4th, and by 8pm on Special General Election Day, February 1st. If you mail your ballot, it must be postmarked on or before January 4, 2022 for the Special Primary Election and by February 1, 2022 for the Special General Election to be counted.

First Class Mail – U.S. Post Office

We urge all voters to return their ballots as soon as possible due to backlogs in the U.S. Postal Service. Your ballot comes with a postage-paid return envelope, so submitting your ballot by mail is free. Your ballot must be postmarked on or before January 4, 2022 for the Special Primary Election and by February 1, 2022 for the Special General Election. Putting your ballot in a mailbox on election days does not mean it is postmarked.

Drop Box Locations

Voters can use a ballot drop box to return their mail-in ballot. Ballot drop boxes will be open until 8pm on January 4, 2022 for the Special Primary Election and until 8pm on February 1, 2022 for the Special General Election. There are 4 drop box locations:

Vote on Election Day

We are mailing a mail-in ballot to every eligible voter to vote by mail. If you prefer to vote in person, the dates and times are as follows:

Special Primary Election:

Special Primary Election: January 4, 2022, 7am-8pm at the Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Complex Vote Center.

Special Primary: Early voting will be conducted on December 27-30, 2021 and January 2-3, 2022, (10am-8pm each day and 12pm – 6pm on Sunday) at the Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Complex Vote Center. The Early Voting Center will be closed on Friday, December 31st and Saturday, January 1st in observance of the New Year’s Holiday.

Special General Election Special General Election: February 1, 2022, 7am-8pm at the Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Complex Vote Center.

Special General: Early voting will be conducted on January 26-January 31, 2022, (10am-8pm and 12pm – 6pm on Sunday) at the Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Complex Vote Center.

In person voting will be offered at the following location: Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Complex Vote Center 7007 Bock Road, Fort Washington, MD 20744

To make in-person voting safe, we will keep voters six feet apart and limit the number of people inside the vote center at one time. This may result in lines and wait times. The best time to vote in person is on weekends during early voting and between 10 am and 3 pm on election day. Due to a continued rise in COVID-19 metrics, Prince George’s County reinstituted an indoor public mask mandate.

The Prince George’s County Board of Elections will conduct a public demonstration that describes the process of determining the Logic and Accuracy of the voting equipment that will be used in the County Council District 8 Special Election. The demonstration will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at 10:00am at the following location:
