Statement Regarding the Department of Homeland Security's Reports of Election Interference

On Friday, September 22, 2017, representatives of the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Maryland was one of the 21 states targeted by Russian government operatives before the 2016 General Election. While confirming that one of Maryland's online systems was targeted, the Department's representatives stated that there no evidence that the system - the online voter registration and ballot request system - was breached.

The State Board of Elections has implemented - and continues to implement - best practices for information systems and uses all available resources to secure and monitor the agency's various information systems. These resources include services available from the Department of Homeland Security.
